Spectroscopic ellipsometry is a valuable technique for measuring optical constants of thin films, for determining film thicknesses, and for determining the structure of multilayer films. Recent advances in ellipsometric hardware and software now make the technique applicable to conjugated polymers, which have highly anisotropic optical properties, and which have many applications in electronic devices. We will use ellipsometry to measure full anisotropic optical constants for conjugated polymers. We will use these results to model the optical properties of polymer light-emitting diodes (LEDs), and to study how anisotropy varies with film thickness. We will also use the technique to characterise ultra-thin self-assembled interfacial layers in polymer LEDs. We have recently shown that these interfacial layers can give major performance enhancement in polymer LEDs, and ellipsometry is a vital technique to characterise and develop these layers further. Finally, we hope to use ellipsometry to study the presence of vertical phase separation in conjugated polymer films, and to use the information obtained to improve the design and performance of polymer photodiodes and LEDs.
