Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal addresses the need to perform highly compute-intensive calculations in order to simulate complex non-Newtonian flows of industrial scale. An enhancement of the computational infrastructure of the University of Wales Institute of Non-Newtonian Fluid Mechanics is requested to help support its development of efficient numerical techniques for solving realistic rheological problems of interest to the user communities. In particular, finite element, finite volume and spectral element methods will be developed for simulating complex, transient, three-dimensional flows of non-Newtonian materials. Efficient algorithms will be implemented on the latest multi-processor technology to solve rheological problems in the food and polymer processing industries. Applications such as the mixing of dough, the extrusion of polymer melts and the journal bearing lubrication will be considered.
