Summary on Grant Application Form
This work is geared towards the synthesis of a range of new solids and their characterisation. Oxytiitrides, oxide-phosphides and oxide-sulfides are examples of mixed-anion solids in which the structure and physical properties may be tuned by changing the ratio of the two anions present. A range of synthetic approaches to these new crystalline solids will be pursued, including the use of a thermogravimetric balance, and their structures will be investigated by powder diffraction methods. Physical property measurements will enable structure-property relationships to be assessed. The second portion of the work concerns the synthesis of a range of transition metal-containing porous materials. Such materials are of increasing importance in the field of catalysis and a range of synthetic routes will be pursued to new pillared clays and modified siliceous mesoporous materials obtained from templated precursor materials.
