Summary on Grant Application Form
The purpose of this proposal is to establish, at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, a state-of-the-art spectroscopic ellipsometer facility with a spectral range of 250 nm - 900 nm and with samples in a variable temperature ambient between 4K and 500K. This instrument will support research programmes which are both inter-disciplinary and inter-institutional and will serve as a springboard for the development of new projects. These projects are currently being undertaken at the universities of Wales (at Aberystwyth and Swansea), Liverpool and Nottingham. All these research groups re supported by modern instrumentation needed for leading-edge research but none possesses a capability to perform spectroscopic ellipsometry, a technique whose power is rapidly being recognised on a global scale. Indeed, to our knowledge, this would be the first such instrument in a UK university and would be an invaluable addition to the UK research infra-structure.
