Boron monoflouride, made from B + BF3 under vacuum at 2000 oC, will be reacted with hard ligands and with CH (BF2) 3 at - 196 oC to prepare stabilised boron-fluoride clusters and fluorinated carboranes which will be characterised by X-ray crystallography, NMR and MS. The products should give access to cluster mono-anions of value as non-complexing anions.
