As landfill specifications become more stringent in the UK and landfill technology becomes more developed, it is necessary to understand fully the physical processes involved in the biodegredation and compaction of the waste. Here, geophysical techniques have an important part to play. In particular, electrical imaging could be an important tool in the investigation and monitoring of a landfill because the electrical properties of the fill are dependent on (1) the porosity and (2) the saturation of the waste, (3) the salinity and chemical makeup of the pore fluid, and (4) the electrical resistivity of the solid waste material. This project aims to investigate the use of electrical imaging in landfill investigation by monitoring the waste during the controlled dewatering of a landfill using a horizontal collector. The response of the landfill in terms of settlements and changes in pore pressure will be monitored closely during the dewatering trial and will be related to observed changes in electrical resistivity. The horizontal collector project offers a unique and cost effective opportunity to develop time lapse electrical imaging as a technique for landfill monotoring, by comparing its results with those from conventional invasive instrumentation in a well controlled and documented field trial.
