A unique technique has been develop for generating in the gas phase, stable analogues of many of the familiar multiply charged transition metal complexes observed in condensed phase chemistry and biochemistry. This project will concentrate on understanding the spectroscopic and chemical properties of these complexes in terms of their fundamental atomic and molecular interactions. Processes such as oxidation and reduction will be explored in terms of the fores responsible for promoting charge transfer within the metal - ligand unit. Experiments are proposed which will yield information of the spectroscopy of the complexes, which in turn will provide details of their structures and electronic configurations. Effects, such as Jahn-Teller distortion, should be very apparent in some of the proposed experiments. Finally, many of the complexes appear to promote quite intricate chemical processes and the intention is to explore these as a function of metal ion and ligand specificity.
