Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of this work is to examine how low temperature ionic liquids (273 K < melting temperature K) interact with dissolved materials. Many of these materials are catalytically active for a range of reactions from oligomerisation to Heck couplings and appear to stabilise homogeneous catalysts in a active state. By using XAFS and diffraction methods, we hope to investigate the structural changes under reaction conditions and hence elucidate the active catalyst present in a range of systems. The systems to be studied may be split into two categories, non co-ordinating and co-ordinating solvents both will be investigated. This research is multidisciplinary in nature involving both physical, inorganic and organic chemists.
