Summary on Grant Application Form
The present proposal aims to establish a novel measurement methodology capable of relating the state of polymerisation of a resin matrix to the state of the strain development in its fibre-reinforced composite. It addresses this problem by offering a new: combination of two complementary simultaneous monitoring techniques: dielectric cure monitoring with in-fibre Bragg grating (IFBG) strain monitoring. Both techniques are capable of giving in-situ and in-real time information on the state of the curing composite. The monitoring will be underpined by micro-modelling, relating the chemical shrinkage in the curing resin and the differential thermal contraction in the cured resin and the fibre to the resulting strain between the' resin and the fibre. The main objective is the development and validation of a new research tool, intended for 'use in the R&D stages of new composites manufacturing processes and structure design and not for use in production.
