This research addresses the specific question of how designs can be assessed more effectively against customer requirements in respect of vehicle handling dynamics. The aim is to improve the confidence with which modelling and simulation can be used at an early stage in the design process to ensure good perception by the customer in terms of expressions of road handling qualities .Currently, the design and development of good handling relies on a three pronged attack, sequentially using modelling, experimental measurements and subjective assessments. This is not only a time-consuming process but, more importantly, it has not led to a fundamental understanding of the cause and effect tie-up between the above activities. The key to a process improvement and reduction in future vehicle development times is by establishing a deeper understanding of the links between the three activities.The research programme will tackle this through fundamental analysis, vehicle modelling skills, interpretation of an extensive data set gathered on a previous project and further experimental work. The proposed process improvements will be validated with a further set of experiments, using the Rover engineers to obtain the subjective and objective data for a prototype vehicle.
