|
The aim of the proposed research is to extend and evaluate an integrated model of the perception and comprehension of dynamic displays, encapsulated within a design support technique that will enable interface designers to improve the usability of their products. Dynamic displays are those where elements on the screen move or alter their appearance, windows open and close, or where the whole screen display is replaced by a new screen, independent of or dependent upon user interaction. Dynamic elements are now commonplace within computer interfaces, and range from cash machines or web sites with essentially static single screens that replace each other as the interaction progresses, through to animated buttons, embedded video, Java applets and autonomous help agents. The theoretical work that forms the basis of this proposal has been initiated within previous projects, and so this proposal focuses on the empirical validation of the analyses and the supporting design support materials.
