The proposed research aims to introduce the light of science into a traditional industry (printing) and address a fundamental problem in micro-scale fluid dynamics to understand and predict how ink in a gravure cell is deformed, stretched and eventually released ontoa web . A combined theoretical/experimental approach is planned involving a multidisciplinary team. A successful conclusion of the theoretical research will be our ability to determine that fraction of the ink in a cell which is transferred to the web and to predict its dependence on various operating parameters. In turn this will be achieved by mathematical modelling and the development of numerical software for the two dimensional, time dependent, free surface flow of a viscous liquid.Since the fluid dynamics of ink release from a cell is expected to exhibit features similar to those seen with a deforming, stretched liquid bridge, the experimental prograrme will camence by reproducing the latter and recording the evolution of the liquid bridge using a higbspeed video camera. Experiments, relevant to the printers hind bridge problem, will then be performed on a novel, purpose built, precision bench-top apparatus designedto permit the flow visualisation of ink release from a gravure cell. Finally the various predictions from the mathematical model/CFD solutions will be validated with data and flow visualisations collected from the bench-top ar aratus.and..also..bv...tine..industrial..collaborators.. on..a..pilot gravure printer.
