This project will study multi-photon interference effects and their application to quantum cryptography and quantum information processing. The proposed research is unique in the UK and is at the leading edge of the field world-wide. Initial experiments would aim to develop a high brightness pulsed source of photon pairs. The probability of two pairs being created per pulse would also be high allowing three and four proton interference effects and entanglements to be investigated at counting rates of order one four-fold detection event per second (two orders of magnitude better than any existing source to date). A theoretical study of medium gain parametric fluorescence would evaluate the possibility of selecting higher order entanglement (6-photon events). The multi-photon entangled states created would be used to demonstrate various quantum optical logic functions such as the quantum fourier transform and quantum error correction. Other routes to direct generation of three- and four-photon states exploiting high order non-linear processes will also be investigated. We also expect to collaborated within the Oxford Centre for Quantum Computation to investigate and develop the interfaces between optical logic and other implementations of quantum logic such as trapped ions/atoms.
