Within this project we plan to carry out theoretical and experimental studies of novel types of high-power diode lasers that incorporate curved grating structures that are designed to provide enhanced spatial and spectral control. Specifically, we propose to design, fabricate and assess the performance so-called c-DFB and c-DBR lasers that operate in the ~1W power regime. In addition to fully characterising and optimising the lasers in the 670, 850 980nm spectral regions (i.e. AlGaInp, AlGaAs, InGaAs material systems) we intend to evaluate the applicability of these novel laser systems in the optical pumping of laser gain media and in frequency-up/down conversion in quasi- phaseamtched nonlinear optical crystals such as periodically-poled of aperiodically-poled lithium niobate. To achieve the necessary peak intensities for efficient nonlinear frequency conversion, dual-section c-DFB (c-DBR) lasers will be designed for picosecond pulse generation by the Q-switching technique. With the a-PPLN crystals it may be feasible to demonstrate significant temporal compression during frequency doubling, e.g., such that ultrashort blue/UV pulses could be produced.
