The research concerns a multi-sensor array inductive scanner, for rapidly generating high-definition images of steel bars and tendons in concrete, for condition assessment. Research strongly suggests this objective is realistic. The array will be fabricated using PCB technology. This will ease the production process and minimise variability between individual elements; this is a critical. The scanner will be portable, suitable for on-site inspection, and manufactured largely from plastics. It will include the drive, control, acquisition, pre-processing and data storage electronics in one enclosure. It will transfer data to a PC for final processing. Research will involve investigation into image enhancement and restoration using knowledge of the blur function of the elements. Approaches based on an analytic solution to the Biot-Savart equation for magnetic field distribution, and empirical finite element models will both be used. Experience suggests that both will be of benefit. Corrosion will be detected by analysing the phase and magnitude of the received signals, as the sensors will be designed to induce eddy currents close to the surface of steel. The array sensor will generate a rapid (5 minutes), high-resolution image over an area which will be sufficient for significant structural information to be obtained.
