There are many applications that can be identified as requiring the genration of multiple high-power and high-voltage pulses, including the x-ray radiography of dynamic processes, the generation of high-power microwaves, etc. Using a parallel array of exploding wires driven by a capacitor bank, the required series of pulses can be generated by a single discharge of the bank, provided that proper matching of the wire sizes is achieved. With x-ray pulses produced by using a single source, the equipment will be more convenient, simpler and less expensive than the cluster of x-ray heads and dedicated power supplies that is presently used.The research proposed will investigate this possibility, both experimentally and using a special two-dimensional computer code.A novel transformer will be required, based on the principle of magnetic self-insulation, and working in vacuum. Coupling of the transformer with the exploding wire array will allow voltages of many hundreds of kV to be generated. A diode electron accelerator will be coupled as a load to generate x-rays by bremsstrahlung radiation.Finally, the possibility of generating two series of synchronised multiple pulses by using two series-connected transformers will be investigated.
