Summary on Grant Application Form
The programme will examine the behaviour of granular material in the light of shakedown theory. Previous data will be re-visited and laboratory and full-scale tests carried out to observe and verify shakedown phenomena. The data will be used to develop a constitutive model for the behaviour of granular material. This will then be used to predict the performance of granular material particularly with respect to structural pavement design. The shakedown theory will be used to modify and improve the design of pavements, railway ballast and other cases where the behaviour of granular material is important. The model will also be used to develop existing design and predictive techniques using finite element analysis.
