The proposed programme investigates advanced optical fibre sensing by exploring novel fibre grating structures in standard and non-standard fibres. It is extensive in scope and based primarily on structures based on long-period gratings written into fibre by UV exposure. A range of novel structures is included for experimental and theoretical investigations, including resonant, phase-shifted, and cascaded structures, as well as hybrid structures incorporating both long-period and Bragg gratings; both standard and high-birefringence fibres will be used. The fundamental goals for the programme reside in exploration of the possibilities for practical sensor devices based on these novel grating structures. Several specific directions are proposed aimed at sensor concepts for multi-axis strain, chemical/biochemical reactions, discriminated or independent measurement of strain and temperature, and the development of a versatile approach to grating sensing for multiple measurands. The project contains many new directions and concepts based on an established base of advanced grating fabrication. The applicant has been newly appointed to a university-funded post, and this programme sets out to establish basic research directions from which it is anticipated that further, advanced studies will emerge.
