Six human mandibles and six midshaft sections of the femur will be used in this study. Each specimen will be CT scanned (together with a calibration phantom) - spiral scanning from inferior to superior part of the faw (or femur) will be performed using a Philips CT700 scanner. The reconstructed slice thickness will be 1mm. ROI measurements of the CT number will be taken slice by slice, and average values calculated for 20 sections corresponding to the sections described in the mechanical testing description. Once the imaging procedure is completed the mandible (or femur) will be divided into sections which will be labelled and photographed. For each of these sections a number of test specimens will be obtained in two or three directions (depending on section thickness) for the determination of the bone tensile modulus at the harvesting site. The measurement will be made using a specialised 3 point bending apparatus. On completion of the above measurements the topographic variations in the bone properties will thus be established and a comparison between these variations and those in the ROI measurement of the CT number will be made to see if a regression exists between the two sets of data.
