The purpose of this work is to build on recent advances in IC technology, improvements in data compression algorithms and our understanding of the design of hardware compressors to realise algorithms and architectures for Gbit/S losless compressors which compress as well as the best class-equivalent (i.e. adaptive single-pass) software algorithms.Three important things will arise from the work (1) our understanding of compressor design will have been substantially advanced; (2) algorithms and core designs will be made available for the research community to use and (3) emerging application areas in high-speed data storage and transmission will have access to prototypse enabling technologies.
