Chemical sensors are of increasing importance in society with major commercial applications, for example, in medical diagnostics and the detection of environmental pollutants. Fluorescent sensors occupy an important position, owing to the outstanding sensitivity which they offer, through detection of light at extremely low levels. Molecules which emit light on a long timescale are of particular interest for such applications, as they allow discrimination of the emission from interfering background fluorescence; however, there are currently few such substances available which may be used as sensors. The proposed work is concerned with the preparation and study of new metal-containing molecules which display long-lived luminescence and which are able to target analytes of interest, for example protons (to allow pH sensing), simple sugars and neurotransmitters such as adrenaline. The molecules will be designed in such a way that the presence of these analytes will induce a change in the frequency or intensity of light emission to indicate the presence and concentration of the substance being detected. The work will entail the synthesis of new ligands for binding of the metal ions to be used (chromium and iridium), and the study of the luminescence of the complexes using time-resolved spectroscopy.
