Summary on Grant Application Form
Analysing dynamic response or deriving the exact dispersion relation are formidable problems for multi-layered media. In previous work the dispersion relations have usually been derived exactly and then asymptotic approximations derived, these approximations usually revealing far more qualitative features than the exact relation. The purpose of the proposed visits is to establish two-dimensional asymptotic models associated with various types of dynamic motion in an incompressible pre-stressed elastic plate. The theory will be shown to be mathematically consistent with the three-dimensional theory, in the sense that integration of the approximate governing equations will yield a dispersion relation in agreement with the associated approximation of the corresponding 3-D relation. The potential for utilising similar methods in respect of multi-layered media and impact problems will also be investigated. In particular, work will begin on comparison of a matched asymptotic expansion approach to determine impact response with a numerical solution.
