Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim is to anticipate and take advantage of recent advances in the fields of nanoscale superconductivity and giant magnetoresistance. The proposed research will examine the interplay between spin-polarised transport, giant magnetoresistance and superconductivity in phase-coherent nanostructures. The effect of ferro/antiferromagnetism on several paradigms of phase-coherent Andreev scattering will studied, including sub-gap conductance anomalies in normal-insulating-superconducting structures, long-range proximity effects in N-S hybrids and large-amplitude conductance oscillations in Andreev interferometers. On the one hand, quasi-classical Green's function methods and multiple scattering techniques will used to predict and analyse generic new phenomena, such Tomasch-like oscillations and inhomogeneous current-carrying states. On the other, ab initio tight binding codes will be developed to investigate material-specific questions, such as the effect of superconductivity on giant magnetoresistance in Cu-Co multi-layers.
