The proposed work attempts to rapidly capitalise on our very recent discovery of the first metalloboratrane cage structure. This comprises a novel tricyclic assembly supported by a trans-annular metal-boron retrodative sigma bond. In principle this unique structural motif should be amenable to construction with a range of elements in place of boron, and based on a variety of metals. Initial work will therefore focus on replacing i) the metal centre (ruthenium in our archetype) with early, middle and late transition metals to establish the effect of d-occupancy on bonding, reactivity and geometry; ii) the bridgehead atom (boron in the archetype) with other potential acceptors (e.g. silicon) and donors (e.g. phosphorous) to compile a tuneable spectrum of trans-annular interactions; iii) the methylimidazathionyl 'buttress' arms of the tris(chelate) to introduce control over the steric and electronic factors imparted by the ligand. In parallel studies, the chemistry of the metalloboratrane family itself will be investigated in detail, with particular emphasis on hydrogen transfer processes which induce (reversible) M-B bond opening, and thus serve as a hydrogen storage capacity with potential application in catalytic hydrogenation processes.
