Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal is to carry out a detailed study of flow over a rough bed using a high resolution Large-Eddy Simulation. The code which will be used is called CgLES and was developed at Queen Mary and Westfield College (QMW) under the SERC grant GR/J 46456 - Parallel Computation Flow Around a Ground Mounted Bluff Body.We propose to carry out a high resolution simulation of rough flow over a hexagonal arrangement of spheres placed on the bed of an open channel. A full investigation of the flow structures that occur in such flows will be carried out. For example: the formation and spacing of streaks, horse-shoe vortices, boils and large-scale secondary currents. We will also obtain statistical data regarding mean and turbulent velocity distributions, turbulent energy distributions and probability density distributions of bed shear stress - something which has great importance with regard to sediment transport. We can also look at the nature of the 'velocity shift' and 'increased viscosity' near the top of the roughness elements and, also, the magnitude and distribution of the dynamic pressure around the roughness elements. Comparisons will also be made where possible between our simulated data and that experimentally obtained which is published in the literature.
