Summary on Grant Application Form
A combined simulation and experimental project to investigate the interaction of shock waves with boundary layers is proposed. Recently developed numerical methods will be used to conduct direct numerical simulations of turbulent compressible flow over a bump. The simulations will provide complete databases of turbulence statistics for several well defined low Reynolds number flows. Experiments at practical Reynolds numbers will use non-intrusive techniques to measure turbulence statistics in bump and ramp flows. Boundary layer suction will be used to run some experiments at low Reynolds numbers for comparison with the simulations. Industry standard computational fluid dynamics codes will be run for comparison with all the simulation and experimental data. Weaknesses of models will be identified and the data catalogued to provide a reference for model improvement. The project will run in the framework of the Defence and Aerospace Research Partnership on Modelling and Simulation of Transitional and Turbulent Flow and addresses the application challenge of shock boundary layer interaction identified by industry.
