The proposed programme aims to capitalise on a recent discovery from our laboratories that certain catechol carbonates undergo a novel radical deoxygenation when treated with ferric chloride. A number of 1, 2- and 1, 4- hetero substituted phenols will be converted to a variety of mono carbonates and carbamates. These will then be evaluated as substrates in the subsequent Fe (III) radical deoxygenation. Once the best HO-Aryl precursor is identified, we will aim to investigate its use in a number of radical cyclisation/trapping experiments as well as tandem cyclisations, by synthesising a range of alkenol derivatives. Further studies will involve the investigation of catalytic cycles as well as the possibility of developing this methodology for the generation and reaction of nitrogen centred radicals.
