Summary on Grant Application Form
Autoclave processing equipment is required for the following reasons:1. An autoclave will allow composite parts to be fabricated at RMCS, Cranfield University in a manner used extensively by Industry (aerospace, automotive etc.). This processing method is not currently available on campus;2. A variety of post-doctoral, post-graduate and undergraduate research projects are concerned with the development of process monitoring sensors for composite materials. An autoclave will allow for significant improvements in the application of these sensors;3. An autoclave will enable the development of on-line process control whereby the information received from the process monitoring sensors for composite materials. 4. Several projects researching health-monitoring sensors for composite materials (e.g. strain, vibration, fatigue, acoustic emission) will be able to fabricate specimens with embedded sensors to evaluate their performance;5. This instrument will allow research into the development of new resin systems with specific properties designed to suit particular applications.
