Summary on Grant Application Form
The research brings together three important aspects of understanding knowledge capture, sharing and reuse in the design process. The Knowledge Structure research (Cambridge) will study existing theories and models of the design process and knowledge representation and integrate these to provide a theoretical framework for capturing and storing knowledge for reuse. The Human Aspects research (Sheffield) will determine how knowledge sharing and reuse is currently handled within design teams. The understanding gained will be used in conjunction with the framework developed in (1), to underpin the design of the most appropriate computer support system. In the past, insufficient attention has been given to the socio-technical aspects of developing knowledge support systems. The Support System research (Southampton) will extend the work on MEMOIR to incorporate the working practices of design teams at Rolls-Royce and British Aerospace. The research will focus on the automatic capture, storage and reuse of metadata representing the action and decisions of design teams.
