This proposal is concerned with a detailed study of advanced manufacturing techniques for high performance anisotropic NdFeB components for operation in harsh environmental conditions, with particular emphasis on enhancing the corrosion resistance in high density compression moulded magnets. The interdisciplinary research programme embraces novel powder preparation techniques, hot and cold pressing of anisotropic magnets, the elctromagnetic optimisation of field aligning systems and the target device, all of which are supported by comprehensive magnetic and physical characterisation, using a range of advanced techniques such as hydrogen kinetics analysis, SEM studies and application specific corrosion testing. The research findings will be embodied in a technology demonstrator electric water pump for emerging applications in the automotive sector.
