Summary on Grant Application Form
There is widespread interest in the data management community in support for the management of both spatial and temporal information. However, although these areas have each received considerable attention, there has been much less activity on the development of spatio-temporal models and languages. It is clear, however, that for many applications that use spatial data, for example in the areas of urban planning and disease monitoring, the temporal aspects of both spatial and aspatial data are extremely important. The proposed programme of work involves the design and implementation of a spatio-temporal extension to the emerging ODMG standard for object databases. This research involves the design of a well founded model for representing spatio-temporal data that is fully integrated with the ODMG object model, and the extension of the OQL query language with constructs for retrieving and analysing data described using the underlying model. Important implementation issues include the development of algebras that support both logical and physical query optimisation, and the development of an efficient storage model for spatio-temporal data.
