The programme is concerned with the application of a reactive atom source to the growth of metallic nitrides. It will explore the fundamental aspects of growth of thin film alloys and compounds using reacting atomic radicals. It will also focus on the deposition of soft and hard magnetic hydrides which have properties that are attractive for applications. The properties of materials will be characterised by several modes of magnetometry, high resolution electron microscopy, scanning probe microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The magnetically soft and high moment nitride films, typically the notable a-Fe16N2 compound and Fe(X)N alloy variations, are strong candidates for incorporation into magnetic read heads. The rare earth-transition metal nitrides can be processed from powdered bulk materials into high energy product permanent magnets. This project will explore the possibility of forming the materials as a magnetically hard thin film.
