Summary on Grant Application Form
The well-known exponential decay of an atom can be suppressed or enhanced in a modified environment. For strong couplings, and structure in the environment, the decay of the atom is no longer exponential. The nature of the environmental structure can be expressed as a frequency dependent coupling which determines many of the features in the decay. For example, photonic band gaps can result in the incomplete decay of an atomic system because of the trapping of radiation in local modes. This proposal examines the nature of quantum mechanical decay, and especially excitation, in these kinds of circumstances. Quantum models for such driven 'non-Markovian' systems will be explored, by using both theoretical and numerical models. The results could apply in several physical situations, for example, in molecules or microscopic laser devices.
