Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed project investigates unsteady interactions of a vortex pair generated over slender delta wings and forebodies. Recent investigations suggest that there exist an unsteady interaction between the pair of vortices over slender delta wings at high incidences. This quasi-periodic phenomenon, which has not receieved much attention until recently, may be very important for aircraft stability. There exists a possibility of a coupling of this instability with the wing motion. Because of the importance of these phenomena in aerodynamic vortical flows, a deeper understanding of the unsteady interaction of pair of vortices is required. The proposed method is a detailed experimental program, where the experiments will be conducted in a wind tunnel with slender delta wings and axisymmetric bodies. Two-point measurements of unsteady surface pressure and flow velocity will be carried out to detect and document the unsteady interactions.
