The applicants' key involvement in MPEG-7 standardisation activities has resulted from two EPSRC CDS-funded projects: Multimedia Information Modelling for Distributed Systems (GR/J78129) (recently completed and awarded an assessment grade 4), and the recently commenced Content-based Automated Annotation of MPEG Video (GR/L81604). These projects have given the applicants a unique background in conceptual video representation which is essential to the success of MPEG-7 and related standardisation activities. Under the direction of the applicants and funded by the applicants' instituion, members of Lancaster's Distributed Multimedia research group have taken an active role in the MPEG-7 process, involving the chairing of sessions, full participation in the meetings, the production of input documents etc. Travel funding is required to support the applicants' continued high level of involvement in standardisation activities, particularly MPEG-7. The extensive travel required for full participation in MPEG-7 requires additional funding to that provided for in the travel budget of GR/L81604.
