Summary on Grant Application Form
The PI has recently introduced a new method for solving IBV problems for linear and for integrable non-linear PDEs. An important precursor of this method was a joint work of the PI with the VF. This method will be applied to the solution of the NLS and KdV equations on a finite domain. The relation of random matrices and orthogonal polynomials to integrability is one of the most important new developments of mathematical physics. The PI, the VF and Dr Chen have made contributions in this area and will collaborate on several related problems. The CoPI and the VF will solve the periodic problem for a matrix generalisation of the NLS equation. This system is important for the description of soliton propagation in optical fibres.
