The proposed research comes within the 'structured Films' theme of Advanced Magnetics Programme. Nanoscale magnetic particles either deposited on a surface or embedded in a matrix are important materials for data storage, sensors and permanent magnets. In each case the interface between a magnetic cluster and a non-magnetic host has a vital influence on the magnetic properties. In particular, it is the source of very high values of the magnetic anisotropy. The focus of the proposal is magnetic clusters of cobalt embedded in a copper or silver matrix. Self-consistent electronic structure calculations will be performed to determine the magnetic properties and to examine the anisotropy. Optimization of the cluster geometry will be included in order to give a realistic picture of the interface. The direction of the magnetic easy axis is sensitive to the presence of the interface; this means that the easy axis can vary in direction throughout the cluster. This feature will be included in the calculations. One of the experimental techniques for accessing the properties to be studied is magnetic x-ray circular dichroism. The results from this research will therefore be highly relevant to the 'Characterisation of Advanced Materials' theme of the Advanced Magnetics Programme.
