The VF will investigate the velocity distributions and patterns of flow associated with environmental features and habitats. This would involve detailed analysis of data sets already known to the VF. The analysis would indicate improved understanding of how an average cross-sectioned velocity links to the lateral and vertical cross-sectional velocity profiles for different channel shapes and roughness distributions. Particular attention will be paid to modelling the lateral distributions of depth-averaged velocity and boundary shear stress where vegetation is present.Two river sites, with a variety of environmental features will be modelled, using both 1D and 2D computational models to determine the hydraulic characteristics and velocity distributions within the river channels. Data to calibrate and verify these models will be collected by the VF at sites along the Riger Tame and its tributaries.From the models and detailed hydraulic analysis, rules will be produced which allow hydraulic output data from models such as rainfall/runoff models or 1D hydrodynamic model to be adapted for use in suitable ecological models. Essentially this means providing a method for estimating the variation of flow parameters within a cross-section of a river reach from a 1D model.
