Summary on Grant Application Form
The principle deliverable of this research will be a prediction method for the acoustic loads generated by jets in general and coaxial jets in particular on adjacent airframe components. Methods based on empirically described near field pressure contours [1] are not considered feasible particularly for coaxial jets. The approach proposed therefore, involves the application of source modelling. The 'three source' model [3, 4] developed at the ISVR, to predict the far field noise of coaxial jets will be combined with an extensive study of the axial source strength distributions of these sources. The latter involves both fundamental research to enhance existing measurement methods [7, 11] as described in the attached 'Case for Support' and an extensive experimental programme funded by British Aerospace.Completion of this work does, however, assemble all the elements needed for a physically based prediction method. In addition the database developed will have significant application beyond the immediate aims of the current work as described above.
