This proposal is concerned with bandgap engineering of heterogeneous nanoparticle multilayers. It is envisaged that by controlling the distribution of nanoparticles of varying bandgap within the layer it will be possible to manipulate charge transfer processes.Initially the project will focus on preparation of the nanoparticle modified electrodes. The multilayers will be deposited using bifunctional molecules to bind the nanoparticles to the surface. A layer by layer strategy will be employed in the preparation, i.e. a layer of nanoparticles will be deposited on a functionalised surface, then a layer of bifunctional coupling agent will be self-assembled and the process repeated. This protocol will allow heterojunctions to be fabricated in the layers.Charge transport in the as prepared multilayers will be monitored using photoelectrochemical techniques. In systems designed to give enhanced charge separation the charge transfer processes will be followed using intensity modulated photocurrent spectroscopy. Electron and hole transport in systems designed to give efficient radiative recombination will be investigated using potential modulated emission spectroscopy.
