This programme will be run jointly by Cambridge University and the University of Nottingham (see separate form). The aims of the project are to develop modelling tools for the draping, consolidation and performance of fabric based composites. Much of the work at Cambridge will focus on the behaviour of high-performance prepreg fabrics for use in the aerospace industry. The project aims firstly to investigate the details of fibre shear during draping, developing standard test methods and defining materials parameters which characterise the draping performance. A new 'intermediate' draping simulation will be developed using these simple rheological models, based on the Laminate Modeler software marketed by the industrial partner MSC. The micromechanics of failure of the draped fabric will be explored, and simple theoretical models developed to describe this behaviour. These draping and failure models will be validated using results from experiments on generic and industrial components. Test specimens will be manufactured using standard lay-up methods and the double-diaphragm forming technique. Design guidelines will be established and limits on the accuracy of the draping model defined.
