We have developed a new method for the immobilisation of lithiated aromatic molecules to commercial argogel resin using a chlorogermane based 'linker' and shown that this allows for library preparation and subsequent cleavage with concomitant functionalisation by electrophilic ipso-degermylation. We propose here to develop a complementary di-metallogermane based 'linker' for which immobilisation is achieved by a palladium catalysed coupling reaction which circumvents the need to lithiate the aromatic molecule (thereby allowing a much wider range of aromatic molecules to be immobilised). Furthermore, we plan to extend the range of electrophiles able to effect degermylative cleavage to encompass particularly C-C bond formation via a Friedel-Crafts process and iodolabelling using NaI-oxidant combinations. Finally, we plan to extend the versatility and economy of our arylgermane based immobilisation to allow for 'scale-up' (i.e. preparation of multi-gram quantities of material) by preparing soluble, germanium functionalised, non-crosslinked polystyrene based supports for carrying out chemistry analogous to that carried out on the germanium linker/argogel combination used to develop this chemistry.
