The project aims to develop a low cost solid state angular rate sensor which can be used in vehicle guidance systems. Such a sensor is needed to maintain short term positioning information whilst the contact with a GPS satellite is lost. The sensor will be a planar device utilising a novel non-contact RF detection method. A fundamental vibrational mode will be excited in a sensing element (disk). A SAW device will be used to detect a vibrational mode generated due to Coriolis forces which is polarised at 45 degrees to the fundamental mode.Stages of work at Cranfield University:Months 1-8: Outline design of the SAW detector. Piezolectric thin film deposition will be developed. Deposition of multi-layered acoustic structures. Detailed film characterisation using electrical and analytical techniques. Design of actuation methods andMonths 9-16: Test SAW resonators fabricated. Technical documentation of the piezoelectric thin film deposition and transfer of growth conditions to industrial collaborator (AEA). Development of fabrication techniques for actuators.
