Summary on Grant Application Form
We are currently operating a low temperature (1.5K-300K), zero field Fe-57 Mossbauer spectrometer at St Andrews University. In response to the high demand for this equipment from chemists, physicists and geologists at St Andrews, and their collaborators throughout Scotland, funds are sought to upgrade and extend the existing single spectrometer into a full Mossbauer spectroscopic Facility for the St Andrews Centre for Advanced Materials (STACAM), and the wider Scottish scientific community. It is intended that the new Facility will be based upon two independent Mossbauer spectrometers:a) a zero field spectrometer capable of operating at temperatures between 1.5K to 300K or 300K to 1000K.b) an applied field spectrometer capable of operating at temperatures between 1.5K and 300K in magnetic fields of 0 to 11.5 tesla. In addition, the acquisition of a second spectrometer will enable both Fe-57 and Sn-119 Mossbauer measurements to be carried out simultaneously.
