Summary on Grant Application Form
(i) Professor Levis initiated our research programme into femtosecond laser induced desorption of cryogenic layers of benzene and toluene from a Pt (111) surface. We intend to complete this work before developing and applying FS pump-probe techniques (i) to determine the shape of the ground state potential energy surface that controls desorption and reactions of molecules on single crystal surface, and (ii) to elucidate the vibrational population and coherence dynamics of reacting adsorbates on metal surfaces (energy and phase relaxation). (ii) Dr de Andres will be principally engaged in our LEED research programme, where our new instrument development has been strongly supported by our development of the fully automated C LEED program for data analysis to produce crystal structures. Dr de Andres will be involved in improvements and refinements to the CLEED program. He will also be involved in our work on improving the analysis of STM images to obtain optimal structural information, and will give advice on current research programme using the CASTEP/CETEP codes for ab initio calculations of surface processes, benchmarked by results from the experimental group. (iii) Professor C. T. Campbell will work closely with us on our calorimetry and molecular beams programmes, with a particular emphasis on our objective to provide a complete description of the methane partial oxidation catalytic reaction.
