Summary on Grant Application Form
Four areas will be addressed. 1. CATALYSIS WITH BIMETALLIC SYSTEMS. Coupling and co-coupling of higher alkynes on bimetallic single crystal surfaces; new reaction pathways (dicyclisation) ; identification of intermediates; mechanistic studies; steric and stereochemical effects; synthesis of heterocycles and maleic anhydride; adsorbate and surface structure determination; mechanism of K-promoted vinyl acetate synthesis; development of practical catalysts. 2. ELECTROCHEMICAL PROMOTION (EP). Application of new solid electrolytes; electrochemical control of surface alloy composition; application to catalytic reforming; catalysis at 200 bar; NOx-promoted epoxidation under alkali pumping; EP without wires; application to discontinuous films and dispersed catalysts. 3. ALKENE EPOXIDATION. New chemistry with copper, silver and gold; oxygen transfer from oxyanions to alkene; scanning probe microscopy studies of catalyst genesis from solution precursors; dispersed catalysts for epoxidation of ethene propene and butadiene. 4. ENANTIOSELECTIVE CATALYSIS. STM studies of molecular recognition, docking of prochiral reactant with adsorbed chiral template; fabrication of chiral tips; chirally-resolved imaging of a racemic overlayer; origin of enantioselectivity collapse; improved chiral templates; single crystal studies of enantioselective hydrogenation in solution; structure and stability of adsorbed chiral overlayers at the solution/metal interface. Keywords describing areas of proposal. - - - -` - Catalysis, Chemistry, Metals, Surfaces, Transport, Energy
