Summary on Grant Application Form
Recent work on electropolymerisation has shown that various macrostructures can be prepared which are bonded to metal surfaces. Under certain conditions this process is reversible. However, the structure of the monomers limits their use in the preparation of useful macrostructures. Results from the recent collaborative research between the Universities of Hull and Bangor have shown that good quality macrostructure films can be prepared from monomers which contain either a carboxylic acid group (-CO2H) or an alcohol group (CH2OH). Such macrostructures would be useful materials for a variety of applications including sensors, NLO arrays and low energy surfaces. This collaborative research proposal between the Universities of Hull (synthesis of monomers) and Bangor (electropolymerisation and interrogation of macrostructures) in association with CRL ( Thornton, Hayes) and DERA (Farnborough) has been designed to try to establish the fundamental features and limitations of electropolymerisation in the preparation of good quality, well-defined macrostructues. Such an understanding of electropolymerisation is essential in the development of this technique, with the help of CRL and DERA, for sensor, NLO and coating applications. This should make electropolymerisation a very attractive novel technique in the fabrication of coatings/sensor arrays to both academia and industry.
