Summary on Grant Application Form
Motivated by quality monitoring problem in the manufacturing of sheet materials, the proposal seeks to develop improved methods for on-line monitoring of spatial variation in product quality using methods which improve the need for full two-dimensional imaging. The research will first develop, and explore the statistical properties of, new classes of non-Gaussian models for continuous spatial variation. It will then investigate the use of multivariate spectral analysis for on-line identification of changes in the statistical properties of the underlying process, based on data from a linear array of sensors. The models and methods will be tested against data from the paper industry, where the spatial variable of interest is opacity as determined by an array of optical measuring devices.
