It is always tempting to explain electronic and molecular dynamics using the familiar language of classical mechanics. Investigating the dynamics of wave-packets allows the transition between quantum and classical mechanics to be made directly. Wave-packets in pre-dissociating and auto-ionising systems, in which the electron and ion core undergo an inelastic collision, are extremely important in understanding multi-channel interaction and, for example, in zero kinetic energy pulsed-field ionisation (ZEKE-PFI) spectroscopy. The focus of this research will be pre-dissociating Rydberg molecules, with the aim of improving our understanding of the scattering process by measuring the flux of pre-dissociation products in real time and using sequences of laser pulses with well-defined phase differences to manipulate the pre-dissociation process. To ensure that this project is successful, and that the apparatus is up and running sufficiently quickly that our group can take a lead and maintain it in this internationally competitive area, a PDRA is requested to do the work. Much of the equipment is already in place in our lab but an additional picosecond laser, some electronics, optics and consumables are also requested for this project.
