The aim of the research programme is the study of emission of electrons from surfaces on femtosecond time scales and the use of electrons thus generated to study ultrafast reactions on surfaces. Visible femtosecond laser pulses will be used (a) to generate femtosecond electron pulses through the excitation of surface plasmons in metal films and (b) to initiate reactions in molecules adsorbed on the metal film. By measuring the spectrum of the electrons that are ejected from the surface and traverse the excited molecules, it will be possible to measure transient excitations ranging from vibrationally to electronically excited states in a single laser shot. This is a novel technique for studying (surface) reactions on a very wide range of time and energy scales. In addition, it allows the study of the basic phenomena of electrons and molecules interacting with surfaces. This may have applications in surface studies, flat-panel displays, sensors, catalysis, molecular electronics, etc.
